With such a busy and exciting year ahead, the last thing you want to stress about is what to wear for your senior or graduation photos. I know firsthand how long choosing the “right” outfit can take, especially for something as important as this. So I created this post to help make the process easier and give you simple, helpful tips on what to wear for your session!

One of the most important tips I can give you is to wear something that feels like you. Choose outfits that truly reflect your personality and style. If it’s something you normally wouldn’t wear or something that feels uncomfortable, I’d definitely recommend saving it for another day. You want to feel confident in what you’re wearing because it absolutely shows in photos. While trends can be fun, make sure you’re choosing something you’ll love looking back on and remembering this season of your life in.

Depending on your package, I recommend bringing a few different outfit options! A mix of casual and dressy is always a great choice. You could bring one outfit that feels like your everyday style and another that’s a bit more elevated — maybe heels, layered pieces, or something a little more styled. As always, I also recommend bringing accessories that reflect your school, achievements, or hobbies to make your session feel even more personal.

College graduates, I recommend wearing a polished outfit under your cap and gown to commemorate this incredible accomplishment. Something a little dressier photographs beautifully and helps celebrate this special milestone. Be sure to bring your stole, cords, and any honor regalia so we can capture those details. And just like with seniors, consider bringing an additional outfit for variety in your gallery!

I’ve said this before, but make sure to choose colors that photograph well. Neutrals and soft pastels are always a great option. As many photographers recommend, try to avoid neon shades, overly bright colors, and busy patterns. This isn’t about limiting your style, it’s simply because certain colors and patterns can distract from you in photos. And for your session, you want to be the star!

Depending on which season you choose for your session, be sure to dress appropriately for the weather. While a cozy fall outfit from Pinterest might be the dream, it may not be the most comfortable choice in the summer heat! You can still look cute and feel confident in any season, it just takes choosing fabrics and styles that fit the weather. And when in doubt, Pinterest is always a great place to gather inspiration!

When planning your outfits, don’t forget about the details! This is the perfect time to treat yourself to a little self-care. Consider getting a fresh manicure, making sure your shoes are clean, and even scheduling a hair appointment if you’d like. Bringing a small touch-up bag to your session is also always a good idea to keep everything looking fresh throughout your photos.

As your photographer, I’m always here to help if you’re feeling stuck on what to wear. My goal is for you to feel confident and completely at ease during your session. I hope this guide gave you helpful ideas and took some of the stress out of planning your outfits!
