Planning a creative photoshoot can be one of the most exciting parts of being a photographer. It’s a chance to bring your vision to life, experiment with new ideas, and collaborate with others who share your passion for creativity. This blog post will walk you through my approach to planning and executing a successful creative shoot — from the initial spark of inspiration to the photoshoot.

Concept

It all starts with an idea. If I’m feeling stuck creatively, I always like to scroll on Pinterest to help get inspiration flowing. Other than that, most of my ideas come from everyday moments, conversations, films, or even random thoughts that pop into my head when I’m not actively trying to create. Sometimes it’s a color, a mood, or a single word that sets everything in motion.

Creating a Moodboard

One of the best ways to communicate your creative vision, to others and to yourself, is by putting together a moodboard. I personally love using Pinterest for this, but there are plenty of other tools you can use. A good moodboard can include inspiring images, color palettes, key words, and even emotions that help bring your concept to life visually. Follow me on Pinterest here!

Models

I usually have a specific model in mind when planning my creative sessions. I’ve been fortunate to work with many talented individuals over the years, which makes it easy to visualize someone for a new concept. But if no one comes to mind, or if no one is available, I’ll put out a model call on social media. A model call asks individuals to participate in a photoshoot, often free or at a reduced rate, in return for allowing the photographer to use the images for their portfolio or promotional use. The model receives beautiful, professional photos to use for themselves as well — making it a true win-win for everyone involved.

Hair, Makeup, and Wardrobe

To fully bring your concept to life, it’s important that your model’s hair, makeup, and wardrobe match your creative vision. Whether you hire a hair and makeup artist, bring in a stylist, or simply give your model clear direction on how to prepare, this step plays a crucial role in the overall impact of the shoot and how the photos will come out.

Scout and Secure the Location

Choosing the right location is another key part of bringing your vision to life. If you don’t already have a spot in mind, consider going location scouting. As you explore, try to imagine your model in the space and see if it aligns with the concept you’ve envisioned. There are countless beautiful outdoor locations to take advantage of, but booking a studio is also a great option — especially if you want more control over lighting and setup.

Shoot

Once everything is in place — from the concept to the model and location — it’s time to shoot! This is your moment to really let your creativity shine. Experiment with different lighting, setups, and camera angles. Don’t be afraid to try something new or unexpected. Creative shoots are the perfect opportunity to take risks and explore fresh ideas, especially since there’s more freedom than in a paid client session.
