Picking an outfit for everyday activities can be challenging enough, so it’s no surprise that many people find it even harder to choose what to wear for a photoshoot. Whether you’re planning outfits for a couples, family, or individual portrait session, this blog post will help guide your choices.
Rather than wearing matching outfits, coordinate with your partner. Choose complementary colors instead of identical ones, and stick to a shared color palette like neutrals or earthy tones for a cohesive look. Layers and textures can also add depth and interest to your photos. Try to avoid logos or anything too trendy — unless that’s your style. Here’s some examples of outfits from my own sessions!
For family sessions, it’s helpful to start with a cohesive color palette. Choose 2–3 complementary colors based on your family size, and add in a couple of subtle accent tones if you’d like. The goal isn’t to match exactly, but to create a coordinated and balanced look. Mix patterns and textures for interest, but don’t go too bold. Begin by planning the parents’ outfits first, then build the children’s looks around them. Here’s some inspiration from my previous family sessions.
With portrait sessions, you don’t have to worry about coordinating with anyone else since it’s all about you! You do, however, have to think about the setting of your shoot. Make sure to choose an outfit that complements the environment, but also let your personal style and personality shine through in what you wear. Don’t be afraid to go bolder with layers, textures, or statement pieces, since the focus is entirely on you. These elements can add depth and make your photos even more striking. Here’s some portrait session outfit ideas from my own sessions.
